2x + 5y = 34

x+2y = 14

Multiply the second equation by two to create like terms for one variable.

2(x+2y = 14)

2x + 4y = 28

2x + 5y = 34

2x + 4y = 28 -- Subtract.

y = 34.28 = 6

Solve for x

x + 2(6) = 14

x + 12 = 14

x = 2

Check:

2 + 2(6) = 14

2 + 12 = 14

14 = 14

Answer:

X = 2

Y = 6
