The area of a rectangle is length + length + width + width, or 2l + 2w. Set these equal.

[tex]\frac{35}{4}[/tex] = [tex]\frac{7}{2}[/tex] + [tex]\frac{7}{2}[/tex] + width + width

[tex]\frac{35}{4}[/tex] = 7 + 2w; subtract 7 from both sides

[tex]\frac{7}{4}[/tex] = 2w; divide both sides by 2

[tex]\frac{7}{8}[/tex] = w, or the width (in meters)
