Dred Scott was an enslaved African Slave that sued for he and his wife's freedom, along with their children. he stated that they lived in Illinois and Wisconsin Territory for four years. There, slavery was illegal and the states laws said that slaveholders gave up their rights to slaves if they stayed for an extended period.
