The function of the integumentary system is that it grows new tissue.

The integumentary system is know as the largest organ system of the body. This is also called skin. The two main layers of the skin includes

  • epidermis and
  • dermis

The epidermis is the most superficial layer of the skin. The maintenance of a healthy epidermis helps protecting the body and it depends upon three processes being synchronised:

  • desquamation(shedding) of the keratinised cells from the surface
  • effective keratinisation of the cells approaching the surface
  • continual cell division in the deeper layers with newly formed cells being pushed to the surface.

Therefore, the function of the integumentary system is that it grows new tissues in the epidermis layer which helps in the protection of the body.
