Two numbers have a difference of 4 and a sum of -8. What is their product?

Assume the two numbers are x and y 
the difference = 4 , so x - y = 4 
the sum = -8 , so x + y = -8 
by solving both equations 
2x = -4 
x = -2 
-2 + y = -8 
y = -6 
the two numbers are -2 and -6
