The narrator thinks that he is an activist and that powerful black people like him should be more important. The important thing is that what he wants isn't what other people might think. There could be people who don't like the fact that a black man is in charge because they think that people who have a lot of power are conspirators. There is a chance that the narrator thinks he is too good and has already found his place in society, when in fact he hasn't.
