The sagittal plane is the location of the movements of flexion and extension. The medial-lateral axis divides the body into the right and left planes by an imaginary line known as the sagittal plane. Extension, a straightening movement in which the relative angle between two adjacent segments increases, and flexion, a bending movement in which the relative angle between two adjacent segments decreases, are examples of joint movements that take place within this plane. Flexion and extension involve movements of the body and/or limbs in the anterior or posterior directions.
Flexion (bending of the joints) in the limbs causes the angle between the bones to narrow, whereas extension (widening of the angle) causes the joint to straighten. All forward motions or joint bending are flexions, and all backward motions are extensions. These movements involve bending at the fingers, wrist, and elbow. For the lower limbs, bringing your thigh and leg forward is called flexion, while pushing your leg back behind your body or in any posterior direction is called extension.
