Explain why a change from 20 to 40 is a 100% increase but a change from 40 to 20 is a 50% decrease.

It has to do with the number you start out with. Going from 20 to 40 involves adding the entirety of the initial amount, whereas going from 40 to 20 involves subtracting only half of the initial amount.
