To do this you need to find the least common denominator. It will be 8. So 7 7/8 is equivalent to ((8 times 7)+7) divided by 8. 3 1/4 is equivalent to (4 times three)+1) divided by 4. But since the least common denominator is 8, multiply the top and bottom by 2. Then, you are able to subtract.
