Salinity variations in the open ocean normally range from 33 parts per thousand (ppt) to 37 parts per thousand. Salinity could vary depending on location especially in oceans near a river or even surface water of oceans in the subtropics. However, in general, salinity should be 75% of the water in the ocean (approximately 34 - 35 ppt).
