Mahavira was the twenty-fourth Jaina Tirthankara. Tirthankara means the enlightened soul born as human and who achieved perfection with meditation. He was also known as Vardhman. He is credited with reviving Jainism around 500 BC. Mahavira was born in Vaishali to King Siddhartha and Queen Trishla. He abandoned his home at thirty years of age and attained omniscience 557 B.C.
