There is many main causes for the French Revolution there was a continuous struggle for hegemony and the fiscal resources of the empire were lacking.  There was also a major political conflict between the Monarchy and the nobility over tax reforms.  There was also the enlightenment as a result of Rousseau's Social Contract.  There were also major bread shortages; Louis XVI was a horrible ruler.
