In chapter 12, when Calpurnia takes Scout and Jem to an
African-American church they are surprised that she is the only one of four
people at the church that can actually read. She can do that because she was thought by Miss
Bufford who is Miss Maudie’s aunt. Calpurnia also taught her oldest son Zeebo
to read, who earlier in the chapter, read the hymn during the service.
