This is of course a somewhat subjective question, but most would agree that yes, they did do the right thing, since the Spanish, British and French were mostly interested in different things when it came to colonization (with the Spanish being primarily interested in gold and silver extraction)--meaning that they didn't have much competition from other European powers.
