How does an author use characters to develop the theme and plot within a series of books or stories? ASAP!

An author creates a character who is flawed in an area and by the end of the book the author creates a plot or storyline that teaches the reader and character a theme or lesson. The lesson learnt by the character can fix or lessen the flaw.
